GOOD LUCK, GREAT HEALTH AND EXTRA YUMMINESS WITH AN VIET 'S YEE SANG

Crunchy lotus seeds play a key role in Ăn Viet's Festive Yee Sang salad. According to the Chinese saying, “吃了 Ăn Viet 香脆 , 包你了好运莲莲, which means whoever eats Ăn Viet’s Yee Sang will enjoy continuous good luck throughout the year.

Besides the inclusion of lotus seeds for nutty taste and extra crunch, we like the fact only 100% fresh, natural vegetables and fruits are used to compose the colourful salad.
Shredded radish, carrot and young mango form the central base. Little tubs of Vietnamese radish and carrot pickles, sweet corn kernels, fresh mint leaves, shredded lettuce, roasted peanuts, snow pear chunks, cherry tomatoes and promegranate seeds are arranged inside the platter. This is to ensure minimum mess and for easy assembly prior to serving. Fresh lime wedges, smoked salmon and a house-made citrusy sauce act as the crowning glory to complete it.

For takeaway, Ăn Viet’s Crunchy Lotus Seeds Yee Sang comes in a nifty platter with a transparent lid. The outer wraparound packaging is designed for easy hand-carry.

To enjoy, simply squeeze the lime juice over the Yee Sang then place the smoked salmon on top. Then pour the citrusy sauce all over the salad and invite everyone to toss and stir the Yee Sang accompanied by declarations of ‘loh hei’ or ‘loh sang’ and other auspicious sayings.

We give two thumbs up to Ăn Viet’s Crunchy Lotus Seeds Yee Sang as the overall taste is delightfully refreshing. All the various components blend harmoniously; the layers of textures perked up by the tantalising citrusy sauce.

You can purchase Ăn Viet’s Yee Sang from 20 January – 24 February 2024. Large portion for 4- 6 persons is priced at RM68.88++ and Small for 2-3 persons at RM28.88++.
For more information, please contact any of the Ăn Viet restaurants as per the details given above.

HOT WOK EATS FROM WOK HEY

Tasty, fast and convenient Asian stir-fry dishes with a modern twist. Singapore’s WOK HEY – a fast-casual, Asian stir-fry take-out kiosk concept has made its maiden debut at Sunway Pyramid recently.

Inspired by the cornerstone of Cantonese-style cooking, WOK HEY was founded by Huang Changyong and Jake Chia, in 2017 whose idea was to create modern interpretations of traditional Asian stir-fry staples in a box. To cater to a broader consumer segment, WOK HEY offers customisable stir-fry dished based on two Asian staples: rice and noodles.

Jake Chia, Co-founder/Director of WOK HEY says: “WOK HEY was built on the belief Asian stir-fry staples can become mainstream in the fast-casual category globally. Having created this modern and well-loved concept in Singapore, we knew this is the right time to introduce the brand to our neighbours.

“With a wide variety of meticulously sourced ingredients from regional farming communities and rice harvested from the luscious paddy fields in Japan, WOK HEY offers more than 2,000 possible combinations of high quality, affordable and fresh meals, appealing to all Malaysian taste buds.

We’ve spent a lot of time and effort working on the supplies, processes and staff training, to ensure the best quality possible in Malaysia. Hopefully the local community would love our food as much as we do."

A simple launch ceremony was performed by Chia together with Huang Changyong, Founder of WOK HEY, and Virose Yung, Senior Manager – Leasing of Sunway Pyramid to mark the official opening of the maiden WOK HEY outlet.

The open kitchen allows customers to view the entire preparation and cooking process at WOK HEY: from the wide selection of quality ingredients going into each dish, the high hygiene standards of the meals, the live cooking with eco-friendly custom-made kitchen equipment, to the packing of customers’ food orders in specially designed boxes befitting WOK HEY’s on-the-go concept while maintaining the food freshness.

We sampled the Egg Fried Rice (RM10) with Seasoned Prawns (RM13.80), Asparagus (add RM1.50) and Tobiko (add RM1.50) and Fresh Udon (RM12) with Braised Beef (RM15.80), Broccoli (add RM1.50), Shimeiji Mushroom (add RM1.50) and Capsicum (add RM1.50).

Each serving was surprisingly generous – it came up to a big plate once the portion was transferred from the box. Both the fried rice and udon were better than we had anticipated; delicious with a smoky tinge.

Also available are Shanghai Fried Rice and Fresh Ramen with a choice of Grilled Chicken, Braised Beef or Seasoned Prawns, in addition to various other toppings at an additional charge.

Lauded as Singapore’s Best Fried Rice, and the Most Innovative F&B Brand (Multiple Outlets) from Restaurant Association of Singapore in 2021, WOK HEY has 34 outlets in Singapore and will be opening its second outlet in 1Utama Shopping Mall come July 2022.

#STAYHOME LUNAR NEW YEAR CELEBRATION WITH DORSETT GRAND SUBANG

Crunchy Jellyfish and Fresh Fruits Yee Sang (RM138 nett per full portion for 6-10 persons, RM68 nett per ½ portion for 2-4 persons) from The Emperor Chinese Restaurant, Dorsett Grand Subang is a uplifting way to stir our spirits for a #stayhomestaysafe celebration this Chinese New Year.

The hotel has other variants available: ‘Japanese’ style crispy fish skin with salmon or softshell crab and Korean pear; priced at RM188 nett per portion (6-10 persons) and RM68 nett per ½ portion (2-4 persons) and salmon and Korean pear too.

In view of current SOPs, the CNY Set Menu A or B, a 5-course set meal affordably priced at RM388 nett for 4 – 6 persons is ideal for small families like mine.  Menu A which was delivered to our doorstep by the Dorsett team featured a curtain-raiser of ‘Sichuan’ Hot and Sour Soup.

Laden with strips of Sichuanese preserved vegetable (zhar choi) and chicken meat, the thick soup brimming with hot, sour and savoury accents primed our appetite for the other dishes.

Generous servings of plain white rice served as the plain but perfect canvas to capture the tantalising flavours from the Deep-fried Crispy Fish with ‘Thai’ Mango Salad Sauce. (Note: Only half of the fish is shown here)

Both the fish and sauce came in separate containers so the fish remained crispy when we poured the sauce onto it. Fans of Thai sauces will find this dish greatly appealing; the zingy chilli-mango sauce enticing you to eat extra helpings of rice.

Hearty umami flavour ruled the Wok-fried Sea Prawns with Superior Soya Sauce, subtly sweetened by caramelised onions whilst the Deep-fried Crispy Chicken with Lemon Sauce proved a hit with anyone who enjoy fried stuff.

Kudos to The Emperor team for managing to retain the ‘just nice’ doneness of the Stir-fried Black Fungus with Seasonal Vegetables (we had baby bok choy).

Menu B (available for takeaway only) features Sweet Corn Soup with Minced Chicken, Oil Poached Grouper Fillet with Soya Sauce, Roasted Crispy Chicken with Thai Mango Salad Sauce, Wok-fried Sea Prawns with Crispy Oats and Stir-fried Seasonal Vegetable with Garlic, and Steamed rice.

Should you wish to order takeaway a-la-carte options (enjoy 20% discount), irresistible temptations include Braised Duck with Dried Oyster, Sea Moss and Assorted Dried Seafood (RM230 nett); Wok-fried Sea Prawns with Superior Soya Sauce (RM63 nett per order); Stewed Dried Oysters with Black Mushroom, Black Moss and Beancurd (RM108 nett per order), and Roasted Crispy Chicken (RM140 nett whole bird, RM76 nett ½ bird).
